Wild Thyme
Thymus polytrichus
Distribution:
Native perennial of dry grassland throughout
Britain.
Habitat:
Dry grassland such as heaths or dunes. Prefers a sunny, dry site
and can grow well in chalky soils.
Description:
Low-growing perennial with aromatic leaves.
The pale purple flowers appear between May and August.
Uses:
It has long been regarded as a favourite flower of fairies in Britain.
Traditionally one of Britain's best-known and most
widely used culinary herbs. It
can be dried and used for many years.
Wildlife:
It is the food plant of the Large Blue Butterfly, the Tawny Wave,
Thyme Pug, Annulet, Ashworth's Rustic and Transparent Burnet Moths.
Sowing Instructions for Seeds:
Sow seed in
spring or autumn in a greenhouse or cold frame. When the seedlings are
large enough to handle, prick them out into individual pots.
Plant the seedlings out into their final position in summer.
Planting in autumn will produce slightly earlier flowering than a
spring sowing.
Our
plants and seeds are of native British origin.
