Distribution:  Common across UK .

Habitat:  Found at woodland edges or in hedgerows in light shade.

Description:  Native biennial/perennial of medium height with bright red flowers from May to July. 

Uses:  The root has been used to produce a soap substitute for washing clothes, by simmering the root in hot water.

Wildlife:  Food plant of the Campion, Lychnis, Twin Spotted Carpet and Marbled Clover Moths.

 

Sowing Instructions for Seeds:  Sow seed in spring in a greenhouse or cold frame. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into individual pots.  Plant the seedlings out into their final position in summer.
