 Wild Flower Calendar
January

Winter Aconites start to open early in the month if they aren't already open from last month!  Snowdrops start to appear very soon after, and if the weather is mild, the first primroses will also appear.

There are plenty of daisies in evidence, as not many people have cut their grass this month!

Winter Aconites and Snowdrops 'In the Green' will be available later this month (January) along with many other native bulbs.  Dry bulbs will be available later in the summer although there will be a facility on our web pages to pre-order them in July.  Click here to look at our Native Bulb Pages  for more details.

Wild Flower Seeds which need a period of cold to break dormancy can still be sown this month eg Primrose, Cowslip, Oxlip, Columbine, Welsh Poppy, Cow Parsley, Yellow Flag. Click here to browse our selection of Wild Flower Seed Packets.

Don't forget to keep at least part of your pond free of ice throughout any cold spells to allow birds & other wildlife to drink and also to prevent the build-up of gases under the ice. Place a plastic or foam ball on the surface to prevent ice forming over the whole surface.  If your pond does freeze, don't smash the ice as it may disturb wildlife in the pond; place a pan of hot water on the surface to melt the ice.

January is probably the month when garden birds will benefit most from putting out bird food as insects are hibernating, the ground may be frozen solid, many natural food sources have been used up and there may be competition with visitors from the Arctic.  The birds will come to rely on the food supply, so keep it up until the worst of the winter is over.

Here are some January Wild Flowers that we currently stock seeds, plug plants or bulbs for.  Click on the photograph to buy seeds and  where plugs are also available they will be indicated on the seed catalogue pages.
